Nessa’s knowledge bombs: #2 Know what you want and go for it

In order to drive forward with your ambitions, you need to know what you want and be able to clearly articulate it. The next step is to create an action plan of steps to reach your goals. For the plan to be successful and uninhibited it is wise to have it run parallel to the company you work for and not have dependencies that will block your progress if they do not come to fruition.

People managers lead in different ways and therefore you cannot always rely on your manager to drive career conversations or shape the plan for you. In the case where you may be left to self-serve, sharing a robust plan can help a manager to understand your requirements & gaps and become an enabler of that plan. This keeps you in the driving seat of your journey.

Promotions in your current workplace are not always an option, and that is OK. Companies create structures that benefit the business model and that is always with specific people in mind. When you are ready for the next step in your career you can choose to stick with your employer or perhaps look at opportunities elsewhere. It's always healthy to remember that your journey is about you, and you have options.

Nessa’s knowledge bombs are a series of short bite size bombs of advice that I have learned over the years.
